HIS GRACE IS SUFFICIENT

In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul touched on the incomparable experience of having been called up into heaven, where he saw things that weren’t permissible to be uttered. Then he told how God gave him a thorn in the flesh, “to keep me from exalting myself.” Paul described it as “a messenger from Satan to buffet me” (12:7).

Now where did Satan get permission to put that thorn in Paul’s flesh? Paul knew it came from God, because God is sovereign and He rules even over the devil.

Therefore Paul entreated God three times to take the thorn away. But Paul didn’t ask beyond three times. Why? Because God said to him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness” (12:9).

Paul responded in meekness and found strength in God’s grace: “Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong” (12:9–10).

You may be crying out, “God, deliver me from this trial!” And God has answered, “No,” because He’s using this painful difficulty to make you perfect and mature, and to keep you from pride—to make you like Christ. So you can say with Paul, “Therefore I am well content, for Christ’s sake.”

No matter how weak you are in your trial or because of your trial, you can rejoice because God’s grace is sufficient. His power is perfected in your weakness. Your very pain will cause you to cast yourself on God and to depend on Him rather than on your own strength.
